Facebook launches public-interest journalism project [US]

May 4, 2021

Independent writers who live in the United States and cover public interest local news can apply.

The Facebook Journalism Project has announced a new opportunity for U.S. writers creating public interest journalism in their communities. They are committing US$5 million to support local journalists interested in starting or continuing their work on their new platform for independent writers.

Applications are open for those looking to gain access to this new platform and the services they are offering to help applicants build an independent business.

The program will offer a multi-year licensing fee to give independent writers time to build a relationship with their audience; monetization tools starting with subscriptions; and access to experts, information and services designed to make it easier to start and build an independent business.

Successful applicants must commit to regularly publish written, public-interest journalism focused on a local community using Facebook’s tools; engage with their audience through Facebook tools such as Groups, live discussions, and other features; and give the Facebook team feedback on their experience so Facebook can improve its products and services.

Journalists who identify as Black, Indigenous, Latino, Asian or another community of color are encouraged to apply.

The deadline is May 20.
